Surface Science Laboratory

Texas A&M University College of Engineering

Liang Research Group

Welcome

Howdy! We are a multidisciplinary research group at the forefront of tribology, surface and interface science and engineering, where we explore how materials behave, interact, and evolve under complex physical, chemical, and electrical environments.

Our mission is to discover, design, and engineer high-performance interfaces that enable transformative advances in energy systems, advanced manufacturing, electrified transportation, and health technologies. By integrating fundamentals with innovation, we aim to bridge scientific discovery with real-world impact.

What we do

Our research focuses on understanding and controlling materials at interfaces where functionality is created and failure often begins. We combine experiments and theory to uncover mechanisms and design next-generation materials and lubrication systems.

Current Research Topics

  • Electrified Interfaces & Degradation Science. Understanding how electrical, mechanical, physical and chemical fields interact to drive wear, corrosion, and failure in advanced systems.
  • Advanced Materials & Nanostructures. Designing nanoparticles, coatings, and bulk materials with tailored multifunctional properties.
  • Nanomanufacturing & Intelligent Processing. Developing precision fabrication processes for nanodevices, sensors, and adaptive systems, including AI-enabled manufacturing.
  • Smart & Responsive Fluids. Creating next-generation fluids for cooling, lubrication, energy systems, and adaptive protection.
  • Interface Characterization & Multi-Physics Diagnostics. Developing new methodologies to probe chemical, mechanical, and physical behaviors across solid, liquid, and vapor interfaces.

Our Team

We are an interdisciplinary team of students and researchers from diverse backgrounds in engineering, materials science, physics, chemistry, biology, and beyond. We work collaboratively in an environment that is supportive and inclusive, intellectually rigorous, driven by curiosity and innovation. We believe in challenging each other to grow while working together to solve complex, high-impact problems.

We are always looking for highly motivated students and researchers who enjoy tackling challenging, open-ended problems; thrive in interdisciplinary environments, and have clear goals and a passion for innovation.
